Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. To achieve that goal, we must produce electric vehicles in sufficient volume to force change in the automobile industry. With a planned production rate of 500,000 cars per year in the latter half of this decade, Tesla alone will require today’s entire worldwide production of lithium ion batteries. The Tesla Gigafactory was born of necessity and will supply enough batteries to support our projected vehicle demand.

Gigafactory construction, on November 4, 2014
Tesla broke ground on the Gigafactory in June 2014 outside Sparks, Nevada, and we expect to begin cell production in 2017. By 2020, the Gigafactory will reach full capacity and produce more lithium ion batteries annually than were produced worldwide in 2013.
In cooperation with Panasonic and other strategic partners, the Gigafactory will produce batteries for significantly less cost using economies of scale, innovative manufacturing, reduction of waste, and the simple optimization of locating most manufacturing process under one roof. We expect to drive down the per kilowatt hour (kWh) cost of our battery pack by more than 30 percent. The Gigafactory will also be powered by renewable energy sources, with the goal of achieving net zero energy.
The name Gigafactory comes from the factory’s planned annual battery production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh). “Giga” is a unit of measurement that represents “billions”. One GWh is the equivalent of generating (or consuming) one billion watts for one hour—one million times that of one kWh.

As we at Tesla reach for our goal of producing a mass market electric car in approximately three years, we have an opportunity to leverage our projected demand for lithium ion batteries to reduce their cost faster than previously thought possible. In cooperation with strategic battery manufacturing partners, we’re planning to build a large scale factory that will allow us to achieve economies of scale and minimize costs through innovative manufacturing, reduction of logistics waste, optimization of co-located processes and reduced overhead.
The Gigafactory is designed to reduce cell costs much faster than the status quo and, by 2020, produce more lithium ion batteries annually than were produced worldwide in 2013. By the end of the first year of volume production of our mass market vehicle, we expect the Gigafactory will have driven down the per kWh cost of our battery pack by more than 30 percent. Here are some details about what the Gigafactory will look like.
The Tesla Gigafactory 1 is a lithium-ion battery factory under construction, and in production, primarily for Tesla Motors at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Storey County, Nevada, US. The factory became operational in the first quarter of 2016. Wikipedia

can you boost the audio?
Great video! The next best thing to being there. Did you get a clear picture on the transition from 18650 to 2170? Is Panasonic making 2170 now that are being used for the GF packs?
Makes the black mesa facility look small.
I would loooovee to be there. Too bad, i'm 16, and i don't own a Tesla with full equipment, or i don't do videos xD
I have to know, why is she carrying around a Tesla logo on a stick?
how did Tesla let someone in with a dog? unless it's a assistance dog which it isn't from what I can tell then I would have thought it would be disallowed in the factory.
The video shakes uncontrollably through it's entirety. How is this even view able to you?
I think the holy grail here was those new battery cells. I thought they were confirmed to be 2070 (20mm x 70mm) but guess they will be a little wider as they were called "2170's." Would be interesting to see them next to a AA and 18650 for scale, but I don't think they were gonna let that happen…
that poor woman had to hold that stupid Tesla Logo on a stick the whole time??
How did you record with a 4K camera at the same time?
Were you streaming video from the camcorder to your phone and the phone streamed that to YouTube?
I have my sound turned all the way up and I can barely hear this
Ironic that the ad was for Ford
Better you'd paid attention to record quality audio, than do 4K for 4K sake.
"It's about 3 Jiggawatts" Lmfao
Good video. Annoying commentary.
Love the Vid, Buy a gimbal or buy me some Xanax 😀
a factory that makes tours of a factory
thanks for sharing!
Amazing i wish i was working for tesla
Only for the rich people in the world.
Tesla is the new Apple of electornics/cars.
It is like a city inside the factory. So, if there is a medical emergency, I guess robots carry the injured to the nearest exist, to wait for emergency transport to arrive. Or maybe they have a medevac chopper standing by on the roof. That may be where the robot stretcher would carry the injured worker. Because I have difficulty imagining an ambulance attendant asking a security guard, OK, so where is the injured person?…. Quadrant 17, sector 6, level 2? …. not helping.
Maybe all the wokers, are robots?
I disliked this video not because I disliked Tesla, but the amount of ignorance of you in this video.
I wouldn't be surprised if Musk builds a fucking nuclear reactor next to it, now that's vertical integration.
so awesome
This will save the world
Why the dog ? is it a dog that smell explosive ? or stuff like that ?
its like willy wonka's chocolate factory. i could imagine elon in a purple jacket, hat and cane
It will be a big abandoned complex one day. much like the spruce goose.
looks like the workings of a halflife type story line
And this is where skynet is born!
Great place to film a movie.
Its like being inside a Borg Cube
did anyone think about the willy wonka factory seeing this?
32:18 Augustus Gloop nearly got his ass whooped by some Oompah Lumpahs.
Hottie
this man had a great opportunity to show us the tour and wasted it on his personality defects. don't waste your hour.
In goes metals and tourists, out goes batteries. They'll need to host more of these events to crank out enough for the Model ☰ production.
Did they say how many Power walls and Paks they r currently making per week???
Thanks for posting this whole thing!
LOVE TESLA!! Just posted a video about why I am investing heavily in Tesla
This place might as well be an ordinance factory. Pure lithium is really dangerous to handle. It burns explosively in water. I would love to see the extreme state of the art fire safety systems they are using in such a highly dangerous plant.
