A lot of people have requested a video on airbrushing basics and the airbrush is really so simple that there really isn’t very much to that. This is a simple video but the airbrush really is simple and you need to grasp that idea. All it does is spray paint.
Apparently, there is a great deal of misunderstanding about the complexity and difficulty of the airbrush itself. Many people seem to think that perhaps it is very difficult to master. In fact, the airbrush itself is so simple that the term “master” is hardly appropriate at all.
The airbrush is simple enough to understand and get familiar with to a very proficient degree. When you play with an airbrush for a matter of minutes, you will definitely get it.
The airbrush really just sprays paint. That’s it, that’s all. You can control air pressure and material (paint) as well as the distance from the surface being painted, speed of your strokes, etc. Really it just isn’t anything like the concert piano or rocket science.
Over 90% of the art created with an airbrush is actually created by what you hold in your other hand — the materials and devices like templates and stencils that control the paint.
This video — as simplistic as it seems — really is the what, how and why of the airbrush — a very simple tool that can easily be used to create some really neat artwork.
Compressors: Any compressor will really do just fine. You can use a large shop compressor just fine. You may already have a shop compressor and they hold plenty of air for an airbrush for sure obviously. You will need to get an adapter to step down your air line size to airbrush line size.
The small airbrushing compressors are conveniently portable and are set up for the smaller airbrush lines. These tiny compressors have to run pretty much constantly to keep up and that can be annoying plus they tend to vibrate themselves around.
Airbrush: Yes, these are cheap Chinese made airbrushes but so are Most of the airbrushes that are labeled as made in other countries like Japan or USA but are merely re-packaged or partly assembled in the US or Japan. German-made airbrushes are fantastic and they really are made in Germany though they are VERY pricey. Other than that you’re buying a Chinese-made airbrush whether you like it or not — no matter what it says on the packaging.
I recommend the Veda Model 180. on my main page at http://www.ChuckBauman.com
These Model 180 airbrushes run in the $35 price range and are EXACTLY comparable in terms of quality to name-brand airbrushes that cost in the $150to $250 price range — and frankly they may come off of the exact same production lines in China.
These Veda 180 airbrushes are inexpensive and very high-quality. Buying direct from the factory under their generic label keeps them cheap since you’re not just giving lots of extra cash to a bunch of fat-cat executives at the big airbrush corporations. NOTE: shipping direct from the factory outlet in Hong Kong by International Mail can take a few weeks.
So, yes, these are cheap Chinese-made airbrushes but so are all of the airbrushes that are labeled as made in Japan or USA, etc. Also, many cheap Chinese airbrushes are total junk and should be avoided. These ones however are really very good. I strongly recommend them. They are great airbrushes and are perfect starter airbrushes for people who are just getting into airbrushing. Again, if you want a pricey, super high-quality airbrush, you are well-advised to buy German.
Watch this video and you will see what the basics are of using and airbrush itself and of using templates and stencils and what the advantages are to the airbrush and why you would choose to use it for certain artwork.
Check out my website http://www.ChuckBauman.com There’s lots of fun, free, and helpful stuff there including images to use for stencils and templates and my DVDs which are full length, excellent quality airbushing instruction DVDs very cheap. I have 3 DVD set right now with 6 hours of airbrushing information, explanation, demonstration, and education for only $29.99 with Free shipping worldwide.

I am new to airbrushing and want to get started at a low price would you recommend the Manda 130 or the Master g23? thank you.
I haven't tried the g23. The 130 is a good basic brush and the 180 offers the nice, handy little feature of an air adjustment right up front which makes changing pressure quick and easy.
what to you thin your paint with
Thank you for making BASIC lesson! 🙂

Great video bud. Checked eBay, no manda anything at all. If you're taking requests for future vids I would like to see at "what happens when .." type vid. You know where you have a problem with the tool, but don't know enough yet to realize what it is. Thanks.
Awesome vid, I also looked on eBay but I had some better luck with manda, the one thing I did notice is that they sell different brands of airbrushes as well as the different actions. One is Veda, another one was called aerograph, out of those what would you suggest?
thank you so much, im going to get the 180. really helpful thanks alot
@RevoltGraffiti

what is your experience on the Paasche Double action airbrush? from what i can see on the box it dosnt say much more. The reason i want an airbrush is to paint/base cout miniatures
This is very helpful thanks this makes me wanna try it soon as possible
How difficult is it to start airbrushing? Now I did watch the video so I know what you think, but I'm talking about how long until you're comfortable enough with the tools to create a "presentable" piece of work, since it does require a bit more knowledge and whatnot with the combining of airflow and paint. I'm thinking about teaching myself so I can paint my instruments ^_^
And money wise, how much? I think all we got is an air compressor so yeah . . .
@bluestribute It is rather expensive. My airbrush was $118 and my compressor is about $150. I used 40% off coupons and cut my price in half. The airbrsuh paints are about $4.00 each (I am 13 and saving up for more airbrush paints). I am still getting used to my airbrush but I find it is very easy to get used to after a couple tests (like on scrap paper). Hope this helps!
@BoomerMyBaby Thanks! That's not terribly pricey when compared to other things I've built so that's good (Duckitar on my channel cost about $600.00). How long do the paints last you usually? I guess if they last a decent amount of time, this might be something to start getting into, and sense you're still getting used to it, they probably last a bit shorter than usually (just with practicing and all).
@bluestribute Well, it depends on the size.I know they come in 2oz (lasts very short, well certaain airbrushs gulp up paints) 4 oz, and 8oz. The pricing is for average 4oz bottles. How long they last depends on how big you paint. I would reccomend getting used to airbrush by mixing like craftsmart paint (about 59 cents at michaels) with water. Then start with the paints and use them as a back-up. What would u use it for?
@BoomerMyBaby I'm thinking about using it to paint my guitars (you can't really tell in my "Duckitar" video just how bad the paint is). I think I might invest in this in the future. Thanks for the help!
I just ordered the 180 model! 🙂 I have never tried it before. Really lookin forward to check this out! 🙂
where does the paint go ?
where do you put the paint? in the airbrush?
Thank you soo soooo much, sir, for this very valuable information.. Its really appreciated! Thank you!
i have the same small air compressor u got .. iam just starting.. got a f1.daul action gravity feed..payed 124$ and got a 50 $ one to.. do i need high air pressure to get the paint to come out ? i got house of color paint..when i put it in the airbrush it clogged up then i started useing model paint .lol.. so what do i need to do to make the paint come out better.. and get fine lines.. iam practiceing .. as mush as i can..
@hockeyfreak043 You have to do a little research on google, before jumpin' right in, but you will need to thin the paints that your using, depending on what kind of paint it is, but any paint you use has to be thinned out. Here's a good source for learning a little bit about it.. youtube(DOT)com/watch?v=LQJnrmmvGfo
can anyone post me links of a cheap hose and wat ever else i need for adapting a model 130 to a normal big compressor or tell me a list please
Thanx a lot, i have been lookig for a tutorial like this for a while. Would like to start airbrushing but there still o lot of questions, like whitch hardware would be the beste for me. What a compresor is the right one and so on…. The market offers lots of harware but there is also lot of creappy stuff out there that costs a lot and does not have the requiremens for a good quality tool. Im loooking for a set or hardware to airbrusch models and motorbike fuel tanks. Any suggesiton ??
1:18 what kind of adaptor, i have looked around and haven't found anything to go from a big air compressor to a small hoe for my airbrush. Giving my sizes or a website to buy from would be amazing
