jajaja you are amaizing luthier and really cool and funny on your answers xD thank you very much …very great videos¡¡
@OBrienGuitars Not opposed to all types of capital punishment or just hanging! 😉 Nice video by the way, I'm about to buy my first HVLP gun, thanks again!
Very good video! I have been out of woodworking for about 6 years now. I have worked for store fixture companies and kitchens companies. It seems that the whole industry is moving towards those gravity fed guns HPLV's. Has anyone had a good experience spraying water based varnishes? I want to make my self a new kitchen , but I'm not set up for laquer. (No spraybooth). Apparenently laquer still outperforms, but I am sick of dealing with it, even in the best spraying environments.
Love that buffing wheel.Painted cars for 20 years now wood finisher for last 10.the only thing I would do different is sand in one direction no circles on light colors no difference but dark colors outside after a while will look like a spider web.I have done some hi gloss jobs on wood with car clear but you have to spray polyester (nast shit) sand 180 then clear, looks great lots of work.Closet Organizing Systems web site has a gloss ebony job I did a while back.
@COlson1968 Thanks for the feedback. I always tell my students that if you want to really learn how to finish, go talk to the car finishers! They are the masters.
Happy Finishing!
Whats the song at the 6 minute mark?
Glad you enjoyed the video! Happy Spraying!
There are many things that can cause bubbles. Usually this comes from the surface skimming over before the air has a chance to escape from the finish. You have not told me what finish you are spraying but I would probably start by thinning it a skoshe and spraying lighter coats.
Glad it worked.
Happy Spraying!
Where can i grab a copy of the electric guitar building book? The videos are great by the way
I have an electric guitar building dvd available at apprenticepublishing
hi! can i ask you something?? i need to paint a white guitar and i dont know what kind of paint do i have to use, im going to paint it with a spray gun, thanks!!
I would use a white lacquer. You can make it yourself by adding pigment to clear lacquer or purchase it already mixed.
hi, do you sand between coats? if so, what paper grades? im spraying rosewood and using water based polyurethane. thx
I sand between days of spraying and not between coats. I usually sand with about 320 grit paper.
HI I'm Luca from Italy what do you mean with " I sand between days and not between coats? how many coats you spray before sanding (wet on wet)??
thanks
best regards , Luca
I spray three to four coats a day and then level the next day before spraying another three to four coats. I spray usually 2 or 3 days before wet sanding and buffing. Don't forget to let the finish cure before attempting to level and buff
Thanks dude, but what kind of paint do you use??
On this guitar I used lacquer.
sorry what I mean was what kind of laccquer : nitro , polyurethane , urathane or…??? this is my last question !!! thanks
I believe this was the old Mcfaddens brand lacquer
I think it was nitro based
Im finishing a tele and wanna get a daphne blue finish with a spray gun, what dye do you recommend using? Thx
a quick google search brings up several that will suit your needs. I would start there.
Good luck.
Thank you for the great explanation!
I'm interested in building my own guitar from start to finish, in addition to finishing them as well. I do not have a HUGE budget to accomplish this task with, so I was wondering what is the minimum setup I can purchase to create professional finishes. What is the smallest air compressor I could purchase? Why do you need a large air compressor to begin with? What other things should I consider?
I have done fantastic finish work with an inexpensive touch up gun from harbor freight. A larger compressor allows you to spray longer without waiting for the compressor to catch up. Not a big issue for guitars though. You could also just use an HVLP system with a turbine. There are some models that are not very expensive.
Okay, thank you for pointing me in the correct direction. I found a ridiculously low priced spray gun on from Harbor Freight. Now, I need to find an air compressor to use. Any recommendations?? Unfortunately, I LITERALLY have no clue what I am looking for. Sorry. I literally want the cheapest air compressor I can buy that will get the job done. I do not need something HUGE, due to space constraints, so the smaller, the better. I do not know ANYTHING to look for…PSI? Size? Hoses? Connectors?
A small pancake compressor would probably work.
Hi, thanks for this great video. Would you recommend the Fuji Q4 for high quality finish? Regards. A
Sure, this is a nice system and will suit your needs.
where are you putting the guitar so that it will dry? your holding it in your hand and not showing us what you did to let it dry. Not being sarcastic but why are you holding the guitar and not hanging it up?
I hang the guitar after spraying and let it dry.
It is the figure in the wood that creates that effect. It has just been sprayed with a clear topcoat.
Have you tried the Devilbiss FLG4 (finish line). It's fairly inexpensive and I find that it sprays much nicer than the Startingline. It's also lighter, and comes in a water-borne compatible version if you're interested in that at all.
I probably have. I have tried many guns over the years.
I see. I won't bother to ask you how you like it then. Nice video by the way.
NO, however, in the upcoming online electric guitar building course we show how to bind and finish a Les Paul. It should be available early in 2014.
Eastwood/Binks are the ultimate spray guns, the ultimate!!
Great video.Very informative!!
Hi there,
I've got a beautiful idea to put some pressed flowers on my acoustic guitar but I'm afraid I might ruin it. I was wondering if you could give me some advice if there is some kind of spray glue I could use to put them on or should I put a whole extra layer of varnish on top? The varnish seems to be a bit expensive, I'm looking for a cheaper solution if possible. It would be amazing if you could give an idea how to do it!
Thanks a lot in advance!
Hello, I WANT To ask you about the clear code? Is that universal clear, the same thing they use on the new cars to protect the paint?
?
Excelente Robby, como siempre un video muy detallista y simpático, a veces quisiera golpearme la cabeza por no haber aprendido inglés, bueno… escuchando varias veces puedo entender bastante…gracias maestro… bendiciones. "Juanca"
AWESOME THANK YOU!
