My name is Byron Toth. I’m owner/operator of Toth’s Score Mor Pro Shop located here in Scores Fun Center in Painesville, Ohio. I’m a world record holder. I have multiple 300 games and an 800 series. And I’m here to talk about bowling.
Spinner style bowling is best suited for throwing on lanes that are very dry, because a spinner style ball hooks very little; mainly due to its low track, it’s almost spinning like a top, and it’s increased axis tilt. Meaning that, the axis points more up in the air as it’s going down the lane, due to the low track.
Rich demonstrates the spinner style. Please note his timing, his hand release, hand position at the point of release, where his axis point is, which is marked with tape on the ball, and the number of revolutions he imparts on the ball.

Sorry, but that doesn't look like spinner style. Spinners use a style of release known variously as spinning, helicopter, or UFO. Regardless of what it's known as, a spinner releases a ball such that it is rotating along a vertical axis as it moves down the lane. Me myself, play hook and spinner. So, there's a major different in these two.
This release look similar to cranker than spinner..
that video is not a spinner… its very much side roll and conventional release. NOTHING like a spinner…
Search youtube for helicopter bowling or ufo bowling… that's a spinner.
To roll a helicopter//spinner
start with conventional grip drilling, no fingertip… you aloso want a traditional pancake weightblock or similar. high topweight… plastic coverstock.
if your spinning/helicopter bowling you use a 10-12lb ball.. your track is about a 3" diameter circle. your ball doesn't hook at all. a perfect strike with a spinner the ball can hit the 1/3/6/10 pins.
Your axis if you roll perfectly it is almost vertical… you don't want "forward" roll or spin.
The IDEA is to release in a way that makes the ball unstable and results in a lot of BALL deflection. your finishing position at ball release is with broken wrist and thumb towards you and fingers towards the pins
If executed correctly it generates a huge amount of pin movement and a lot of strikes.
Its the complete opposite of the idea behind cranking.. in this case you want the ball to deflect, NOT drive through the pins.
It can be effective with practice… it is NOT dependant on lane conditions at all…your rolling straight but with "top spin" either way this video isn't spinning
I naturally throw a spinner, because I'm self taught and back when I started there was no YouTube. With that being said, this is not a spinner.
This instruction video sucks balls lol… it doesn't show u exactly how to throw it…
That isn't a spinner shot. I would expect a pro to be able to know the difference between cranker and spinner.
A proper spinner thrown right handed should hit the 1, 3, 6, and 10 pins making a domino effect to knock the other pins down. The ball should start on the left and go right. This is definitely a cranker release.
This video was not helpful. After 17 seconds of listening to you plug yourself and your pro shop, you merely give technical details about the spinner style. Afterwards, you show a bowler using a traditional release – nothing like the spinner style at all.
You could have given so much helpful information on the spinner style, such as the weight of the ball (spinners tend to use a lighter ball), a slow motion segment on how the ball is released, how the ball should be drilled (fingertip, standard), and so on. But no.
that was stupid. no offense, i didn't learn anything.
That's a hook not a spinner!!!
Actually, this is spinner style. There are two types of spinners:
Spinner (this video) – Bowler has low flare and low track which creates a small amount of hook.
Spinner (also known as UFO or helicopter) – Bowler literally spins the ball like a top in order to create deflection when hitting the pins. Bowlers that use this style go with lighter weight balls that range from 10 – 12 pounds due to amount of wrist action needed to spin the ball.
Thats not a spinner release.. Looks much more to stroker style with low rev
Wasn't that a tweener
Hey stupid people in the comments. Yeah, you right there, there are two different spinners.
There is UFO like little kids trying to hook or people in mostly Asia. Or there is this the low hook, dry lane spinner. This is a very good video it's just idiots apparently don't know bowling styles!
Looked exactly like the cranker to me! Just early timing.
That just looks like a normal shoot.
