Keller Rinaudo: A mini robot — powered by your phone
|Keller Rinaudo: A mini robot — powered by your phone
Your smartphone may feel like a friend — but a true friend would give you a smile once in a while. At TED2013, Keller Rinaudo demos Romo, the smartphone-powered mini robot who can motor along with you on a walk, slide you a cup of coffee across the table, and react to you with programmable expressions.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look, its R2!
What a bright young man but useless invent makes this absolutely timewaste.
Remote control toys exists since many many years, TED is for advanced technologies that are not yet in use.
Research for "quadcopter" you will understand what I mean.
Don't say "yes but this one is a robot" NO IT ISN'T!
this is just the beginning @@ there will be more to come
I like the robot or gadget or whatever you want to call it. I think the price reflects the functionality. Judging from the comments I have read there are a lot of technology snobs that have nothing better to do than slag off others who are at least out there giving it a go. a go. I make no apologies for the fact that I love gadgets.

Robot implies autonomy… how does this qualify as a robot? It's a glorified remote controlled car at best.
No, the burgundy t-shirt with "I love robots" no. It's not nerd, it's just ugly.

Yeah, seriously. Its so easy to see through this cheap gimmick it isnt even funny.
Thats a fun use of technology. Good job.
I tought this was about inovation and ideas worth spreading.
NOT ABOUT SELLING APLLE PRODUCTS.
I had a remote little car 20 years ago that was cuter than this thing. And it didn't need a phone and a tablet for me to play with it. Just sayin'…
Apple users are not bothered that Android exists because Android just exists and doesn't get in your face at every corner, doesn't suffocate you with commercial bullshit and doesn't try to sell you overpriced crap.
Relax. Just ignore them. These are teenagers who will get cured once they get laid. People are not going to judge you in the real world by your phone. Just because some android users post 3rd rate comments on youtube does not make all android users 3rd rate people in the real world. No need to be ashamed for this and take this too personal.
Forget Apple? in a second, if not for the aggressive marketing techniques. I don't use either apple or Android, don't give a shit about either. I use windows on my desktop but I know windows is not God's gift to humanity like Apple. It is a piece of crap technology just like Apple. It is just cheaper. But everywhere I look is I-shit that does the same thing as any other product, cost at least triple and is being sold by ex Jehovah's whiteness. (or at least that is what they seem to me).
Can this robot run on android devices
yawn
The robot was not supposed to substitute for physical meetings, but to increase the contact between people too far away from each other to meet physically. A complement, not substitute. If it works well as a complement is another question…
my apologies,.. but its not a gadget…
Buy it and see it for yourself, in 2 days it will be in some corner eating dust…
Its robotics at a 10th of the price it wouldve been a few years ago…it helps people connect in a new fun way…its pretty impressive to me
The fact is if you did your research android was an operating system made for cameras…yes cameras….then google bought it and made it for cell phones to compete with Apple…every cell phone in the world owes its existence to Apple and the iPhone…and this coming from an Android user myself…why even fight about it its a cell phone for Christs sake…Apple charges alot because they make devices with superior build quality AND support to go along with it
lol
Want one!
Why do people spend money studying robotics?
tough crowd
I wanna hve one dt kind robot….:-)
So cute
Does it do my dishes for me? mow the lawn? wash my car? Then how is it a personal robot? LOL its just a toy with a robot sticker.
only iphone and ipad iOs mmmm naaa next video
what makes this a robot
Can I used it as a baby sitter? JK.
I think this is amazing, it is one small step and soon there will be more and more of these. I cant wait to see different varieties, one that looks like Robosapien or Curiosity would be cool. Maybe Johnny 5, or Wall-e. The possibilities are endless.
Where can I buy one right now?
I don't want a toy; I want a worker. It's not worth my money if it doesn't sustain me. That's the plain truth.
This guy to a kid in a 3 world country., "Look a smiling robot".
The kid, "Thank you, I'm not hungry or poor anymore".
useless
Why do they have a sales pitch for a crappy Radio Shack toy on TedTalks? Really I could taped my phone to an RC car for a lot less then $150
gratz
So this isn't for lightning connector?
They should add some accessories so I can use it to garden my fairy garden 🙂
cool
I've thought of using my android as a robotic brain. For instance, when autonomous cars become available, don't by a brand new car, just require your car and connect the phone with your car and run the program.
yeah a $150 toy to strap my £600 phone to and give to my 8 year old, why didn't I think of that.
Oh no, he just drove it of the table and broke the phone and toy. Oh well.
I got one for Christmas and it's pretty cool
Hes talking about that everybody can use it. and then put it on a non open source platform like the iphone is pretty poor… and talking about inexpensive robots and using the brain of an iphone and the controls of an i pad has nothing to do with cheap personal robots we are talking about 1500 bucks here..nothing to do with sience or robotics
sorry i like the tec videos from TED but this is clearly a commercial for an apple gadget.
credits to Apple im disapointed.
I love robots but I do not love Apple
