Christopher deCharms: A look inside the brain in real time
|Christopher deCharms: A look inside the brain in real time
http://www.ted.com Neuroscientist and inventor Christopher deCharms demos an amazing new way to use fMRI to show brain activity while it is happening — emotion, body movement, pain. (In other words, you can literally see how you feel.) The applications for real-time fMRIs start with chronic pain control and range into the realm of science fiction, but this technology is very real.

Amazing!!!
Where can I get one?
Could bring jerking off to a whole new level!!
Cool. If I were lazy I could just put a needle into my head at the right location to get the same sensation as jerking.
I could leave it there all day.
We can finally learn to fully control our own brain!
Sweeeeet.
Might make you talk funny and make inappropriate moaning noises, and you might lose your job and social life, but would be well worth it.
🙂
So just biofeedback then?
yes this was way too short… did you see the one about phantom limb syndrome??? It is excellent. TED rocks!
I can see my brain. It says I feel guilty, but I actually feel pleasure 😀
Yes..it is too short. I did enjoy this and want more…
Thank you
Excellent lecture and interesting to listen to as well.
i understand seeing the areas of the brain light up to correspond with what you are doing/thinking/feeling, but i want to know more about the "control". he said that only you will be able to control it, does that mean that you can develop a kind of "neuro-feedback" (as opposed to biofeedback) and gain control of your brain by studying how and when your brain lights up?
if you're interested, check out the MRI music video on my channel!

Interesting that, all those people watching this clever guy, acting very stupid holding their arms and show their biceps. Wondering if there was an autonomy at the venue telling all those people to 'do what speaker say'. Thanks to youtube, those talks do not be heard only by those.
4 min on this! Better than nothing, Thank you 🙂
bring a magazine 🙂
not very many people actually flexed…
They can now predict words which someone is thinking of, simplying by analyzing the fMRI images.

uh, he didn't mention that many meditation masters who have complete control over this stuff and have already illustrated it in the lab…….
Where do I sign up!?
It's MRI, it's simply very strong magnetic fields setup in order to cause the water molecules to kind of twitch and respond to certain radio waves. We'd know at this point if magnets were not safe.
Think of all the things it could be used for: Treatment of brain injury, treatment of autism, it could be used in psychotherapy/psychiatry to aid the psychologist/psychiatrist, it could be sold commercially as a cognitive enhancer,
it could be used to treat anger/aggression, cognitive distortions, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder (although for anxiety-related disorders, self-awareness such as this might actually exacerbate anxiety), stress-reduction, treating mental intelligence deficiency, pain treatment, meditation, post traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit disorder, tourette's syndrome, etc
Think of the amazing things this technology could be put to use for! You could become self-aware of your own brain functioning! You could in theory, train/exercise your cognition and perhaps even enhance the amount of control you have over your emotions and thoughts!
Does anyone know where fMRIs are done where the patient can view the result in real-time?
it seems that having too much awareness just results in neurosis and obsessive thinking
its cause his hair isnt crazy and grey enough
CDC, Just tell me when to come down, jump into the scanner, and learn to achieve inner peace and harmony! That's what I want to learn how to do. RSB.
That's genius!!! The next step is memory travelling.
This is BS. I mean, we already have the power to change our ways of thought. A real time image of my brain lighting up isn't helping more then pills or a shrink. All we have to do is make a decision and act on it.
I thought TED was better then this. It's not worth spreading, and it's not even a new idea.
You are a silly person.
Please let me do this!
he has 666 videos! BE AFRAID!
@bubach85 Naive
@thebeholder23 No I think you are. What good is images of our brain in action to normal people? Come on, it's not like we can spend that much time in a giant god damn magnetfield anyway. He starts the talk as if it was now possible to literally program our minds to do anything – shut down areas that light up in pain for example. But no, all we can do is observe what has been possible through normal MRI for a long time. Not very exciting at all. Yawn..
@bubach85 Well… another post said that this is biofeedback, he is right, but errs saying that has little of interest or use, bc it has been proven effective for many things (read journals). Biofeedback rivals pills, with no side-effects, and with a real sense of selfcontrol, once you learn to control it, you can still do it without the machine. "All we have to do is make a decision and act on it"… that is undoubtly naive. I recommend reading good psych books, not the pop ones.
How do I sign up as a research subject? Need help in controlling some animal urges;)
how soon will we be seeing this technology?
Thanks for the heads up, man. Information like that can make someone pretty skeptical, and from what you said, it worked.
what the hell!, I had to flip my monitor just to read your commentm please dont do that again
that technology has been available since the 90's ffs. they only present it now ?
they have been using this tech for so many years. nyone disagree ?
The idea people have with this tech, is faaarr different then the idea the inventors have.
we think positive about this, curing disease and helping people. the inventors have other motives. and to only be publishing this now, is to make it look like tech is only developing in a certain rythem.
Technology can be used to help or enslave… I hope this one will be used to help.
this is amazing
As hypnotists, we have been helping people do this for decades. Glad to see that the scientific proof is finally catching up.
Do think that this system, will eventually, enable tinnitus sufferers (I'm one), where the noise is generated in the brain, to be able to turn the noise off. If so, I want one.
..
Is there therapy available today that uses this technology?
Dr Christopher deCharms shows a revolutionary application of MRI; it's amazing how he linked the brain images with the emotions or muscular activity. And the best is yet to come!
I have no time – may I quote you on this?
At OO:01 it shows Bill Clinton as a "remarkable people". Mena Airport during his time of being Governor of Arkansas is one thing, THIS something else, shame on TEDx: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1GQehNcZZw
