That mig weld penetration looks substantially more to me, and it was faster, which means it has more strength, so for me, mig looks the better choice.

Just stumbled across this. Excellent vid! Now if I could just figure out a good machine for home use. Some days I might be welding SS exhaust pipes and other days aluminum angle… any recommendations?

This is a good example of someone who speaks clearly, videotography is also clean and includes only the subject at hand without any fumbling. lol.. the mig had better penetration then the tig.. iv'e had poor luck with tig welding aluminum.. very frustrating and not strong welds.. throw the spool gun on and im done in a jiffy and its stronger anyway

Hi Jody….I'm ordering my Everlast 255EXT next week along with a 60S plasma cutter. I've done all of my aluminum welding using a Millermatic 210 and a Spoolmate 3035 spool gun. It looked like the aluminum you were using for the weld test had factory edges. I've always cleaned my aluminum for MIG welding. Could the porosity shown in the cut section of the MIG welded aluminum be from the factory edges? I know the TIG didn't show the same porosity, could that simply be due to a better gas coverage? sigh my welds look like sh#t compared to this. But we are using a Lincoln 140 which is 110 volts and 1/8in thick aluminum which we pre-heat with a torch. Temp sweet spot is about 225 degrees, but holy crap, no way can I travel THAT fast and it certainly cannot straight pass a line, stacking dimes gives the best result. I thought my welds were looking great until I re-watched this video 😛 😱
Tig will give you much better looking welds, but the Mig will be close enough in most cases. If I have a weld that the public is going to see, I may Tig it for appearance.

Why o why, do you not – grind, file, smooth or otherwise dress welds in aluminium?
